On April 5, 2019, the Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (BASCAP) of the International Chamber of Commerce organized a discussion in Panama City about the progress of the Declaration of Intend to prevent the Maritime transportation of counterfeit goods (known as DOI). In November 2016, Brand Owners, Vessel Operators and Freight Forwarders came together to sign this Declaration to prevent the maritime transportation of counterfeit goods. Signatories have worked together intensively to develop voluntary guidelines in various areas to face the issue of counterfeit goods within the supply chain including a “Best Practice in Know Your Customer (“KYC Best Practice”) for Maritime Operators, published in 2018. The DOI is based on the following principles:
- Zero Tolerance Policy regarding counterfeiting.
- Supply Chain Control
- Risk profiling.
- Raising awareness and conducting training.
- Sharing information and cooperation
- Non-binding terms.
The signatories of the DOI are the following: Chanel, P&G, Honda, CropScience, Unilever, Philip Morris International, DuPont, Bayer, Lacoste, Longchamp APL, Arkas Line, Kuehne + Nagel, Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Fonasba, and Expeditors.
